1964 Triumph TRW Ex Royal Air Force

The Triumph TRW (WD - War Department) is a rugged, 500cc side-valve (flathead) parallel-twin motorcycle designed for the British military during World War II but produced post-war, known for its durability, quiet operation (crucial for dispatch riders), ability to traverse water, and inclusion of early features like telescopic forks and an alternator, with many sold as surplus and popular for off-road use.

Key Characteristics:

  • Engine: 500cc side-valve (flathead) parallel-twin, designed for quietness and low-end torque.

  • Military Design: Built for toughness, reliability, and simple field maintenance, capable of fording 15 inches of water.

  • Production: Designed in 1943, but production began post-WWII (around 1948) due to factory bombing, running until the mid-1960s.

  • Military Users: Used by British & Commonwealth forces (Army, RAF, Canadian Air Force, etc.).

  • Innovations: First Triumph with telescopic front forks and an alternator (AC electrics).

Despatched to MOD London in November 1964

The frame & engine numbers are 159 numbers apart & where both despatched to MOD London one in November 1964 the other in December 1964

This motorcycle has just arrived it has come in as part of a small collection of four other motorcycles unfortunately the previous owner has passed away

The son of the previous owner informed me this TRW was stationed in Cyprus

Although I have no paper work to back this up although it looks like it was re-imported back to the U. K. in 1978

Current V5C registered as Historic

It looks like this bike had quite a bit of work done to it around 2004/ 5 as there are quite a few receipts for parts in the file

After a short ride up the road it runs & rides as it should everything is working

Starts easily engine sounds very nice with no smoke

May need futher checks & very light recommissioning due to not being used in the last year or so

Overhaul very nice but not immaculate condition loooks to be an older restoration

A lovely looking machine
